Starting with unsophisticated naturalism, using the wording of The Calvert Journal, and work in glossy magazines, Masha Demyanova quickly found her method. The main thing is to find imperceptible details that escape from a superficial look, to fix fleeting movements and gestures, to guess the incompletely expressed emotions, to catch and enchant the very matter of time. The interest in physicality (first of all, female and adolescent, but not only) contributed to the fact that she projected this specific view also on the surrounding things and spaces. Demyanova literally humanizes, revives the world frozen in pictures. This is facilitated by the fact that from her favorite filmmakers Robert Bresson, Bruno Dumont, Philippe Granrieu, Maya Derens and Jean Rollen, she, by her own admission, borrowed the “sacred atmosphere of the narrative”. The main theme of her research is working with symbols, images, archetypes through documentary and staged images.
